Acne Keloidalis Nuchae (AKN) affects mainly men of African descent ranging from age 13 to 25. Also known as ‘Acne Keloidalis’ or ‘Folliculitis Keloidalis,’ this condition is a long standing hair follicle disease which creates bumps and scars of the skin of the back of the head and neck.
Who Gets AKN and How Does One Get It?
Studies have shown that Acne Keloid Nuchae tends to affect more men of African descent because they are more likely to develop tightly curled coarse hair when kept short. Ultimately, it is the curl on the skin of the scalp which causes the irritation, forming follicultis and swelling of the follicles, then creating lesions and keloid scarring which not only affects individuals physically, but emotionally as well.
